military, patriotic and war

Category: Topics

Definition: Evocation of the national sentiment. There can be military men but the light can be cast on civilians too. Also numbers with soldiers, no matter the era they live in and the kind of uniform they wear. One sailor, by himself, is not enough if his presence is totally unjustified in terms of narration.

Example: “Who’s Complaining” (Cover Girl); “My Forgotten Man” (Gold Diggers); “My Place” (On the Town); Beginning of Merry Widow; ending of You’ll Never Get Rich; “New York, New York” (On The town) (soldiers on leave). Includes “Tomorrow Belongs To Me” (Cabaret) even though it is here a questionable form of patriotism.
